- »In the final chapter of this section, Boyle’s Chapter 32 seeks to identify some of the ways media representations of sexual violence have shifted in the long #MeToo moment’. She argues it is far more complex than traditional feminist critique of news media has allowed looking at the proliferation of story types that disrupt the notion of a singular sexual violence story, victim or perpetrator. - »There have also been some significant shifts in representations of men’s sexual violence against women in the past 15 years. This period – which I refer to as the long #MeToo moment – is characterised by the popular visibility of misogyny and feminism. It is striking that the high-profile cases which have served as ‘trigger events’ for activism – and for sustained, feminist-inflected media coverage – in different parts of the world in this period, have often been cases which have generated questions and concerns about material violence and its representational significance. At the same time, feminist interest in the media has extended beyond representational strategies to consider the media as a tool in the abuser’s arsenal and as a means of enabling feminist protest and activism. As this suggests, whilst men’s sexual violence against women has arguably never been more visible, the implications of that visibility remain profoundly contradictory.
